The structure was originally a small temple built in 1496 by Holy Priest, Rennyo. Throughout the 16th century it was destroyed in war and between 1620 to 1629 Osaka Castle was reconstructed, with the Main Tower completed in 1626.

 

Some of the structure was destroyed during world war II in 1945 and in 1955 it was given Special Historic Site status by the government. Osaka Castle is now the most visited castle in Japan.
